Northwave Outcross Plus £114.99
Northwave’s Michelin-soled shoes are good all-rounders for those with tall or high-volume feet, but limited adjustability and potential pinch points make trying before you buy essential. While the outsole sticks well on rocks and wet roots, the shallow tread lugs mean they haven’t got much bite in mud. They walk OK despite reasonable pedalling stiffness, thanks to the flexible toe section and structured heel. We know from long-term use that the upper is impressively durable. Mesh at the front scuppers weatherproofing, but there’s a Gore-Tex version for £45 more. The twin wrap-over straps offer limited adjustment and Northwave’s ‘SLW2’ dial system only tightens the top, so the forefoot can be left baggy. Tongue crumpling and pressure points are a potential issue too, and mud can make the dial seize up. www.i-ride.co.uk
