Bontrager Rhythm £139.99
Bontrager’s distinctively reptilian Rhythms are tough and practical once worn in (they feel stiff initially), if you can deal with the narrow fit around the toes. The chunky, soft-compound tread is the same as on the Evokes, but caramel coloured. Toe-stud mounts make them filthy hike-a-bike friendly, and a carbon reinforcing shank means they pedal efficiently too. The scaly-looking ‘GnarGuard’ upper takes a while to soften up, particularly around the raised heel and inboard cuff. It offers great impact and weather protection though, and scrubs up well after muddy rides. The fit is very narrow even after bedding in, and the single wrap-over strap doesn’t do much to help security. That means tightening is handled entirely by the Boa dial, which can create a pressure spot on top of the foot. www.trekbikes.com
