Shimano AM9 £119.99
The AM9s tidy up previous niggles with Shimano’s downhill/enduro shoes with a lighter, even comfier design that riders crossing over from flat pedals will love, although the floppy sole is definitely more about grip than grunt. The low tread means entry/exit is easy even on platformstyle pedals and the sole moulds around big cages for extra grip and feedback. As long as it’s not muddy, they’re good hike-a-bike shoes too. Sole droop makes them demoralising to pedal in though, particularly on smaller pedals. The cord-lock fastening system also loosens quickly, leaving the forefoot baggy, so you need to rely on the wrap-over strap for security. Weight is good, despite the reinforced toe and raised inside ankle. The flap helps keep the elements out, and they dry faster than previous Shimano gravity shoes. www.madison.co.uk
