FAMILY FRIENDLY EVENTS FOR 2019

The best mountain bike festivals and events with stuff to do for all the family

-

Looking to make a weekend of it with the family next year? Our pick of the best festivals and events on the calendar

These are a great way to introduce the family to cycling – and ensure you get your annual festival fix into the bargain. There are more and more weekend events popping up across the UK that have races and events for adults to enter but also offer something for the little ’uns to take part in or just watch and be inspired.

There’s usually no pressure or cost to enter kids’ events (they can be pretty subject to changing their minds on the day, after all), so they can do as much or as little as they feel like. Plus there are often other activities like bouncy castles, play areas and rides on offer too. Here are some of the best from the last year – keep an eye out for confirmed dates for 2019 in the coming months.

Malverns Classic Eastnor Deer Park, Ledbury

When: June 14-16, 2019 Overview: This iconic weekender returned in 2018 with plenty of old-skool action for the grown-ups but also a load of cool activities for their offspring. The highlight being the balance bike race, on the same finish stretch as the adult races, where young riders could get their first feel of what it’s like to have crowds of spectators willing them across the line. With the Muc-Off pump track, a designated kids’ area and loads of fun to watch, the chilled-out, inclusive feel of the Malverns is a must!

Tweed love Tweed Valley, Scotland

2019 date: TBC Overview: This month-long festival in the rich mountain biking landscape of the Tweed Valley is packed with a host of family ride-out events and kid-only skills sessions, culminating with a big weekender on Tweed Green in Peebles. It’s steadily grown over the years and is now one of the biggest events on the MTB calendar.

Big Bike Bash New Forest, Hampshire

2019 date: TBC Overview: One of the few festivals on the circuit to still have a lake jump, which is always popular with competitors and spectators alike. This super-friendly weekend event includes a balance bike race, a toddlers’ pyjama race and the unique malt loaf eating competition. A weekend that doesn’t take itself too seriously, this is a great introduction to the fun that can be had on and around bikes.

Alpkit Big Shake Out Great Longstone, Peak District

2019 date: TBC Overview: For slightly older kids. As well as bike skills and coaching sessions, there’s a chance to kayak, abseil, learn bushcraft and listen to a whole load of inspirational talks and movies. If this doesn’t get them hooked on the outdoors and involved in cycling for life, not much will!
