Keep it lit this winter

Go night riding to make the most of the dark evenings

-

With the nights drawing in and the clocks soon going back, getting out on your bike in the evening becomes an exciting adventure. Riding in the dark can be just as fun as riding in the day, but there are a few extra things you need to consider to make the most of it.

01 Get prepped

Prepare your bike earlier in the day. Ensure your tyres are the correct pressures – anything you can do to prevent punctures and not have to perform trailside repairs will make your ride much more enjoyable.

02 Don’t skimp on kit

Make sure to carry tools, spares, and a pump. There’s nothing fun about having to walk home in the dark.

03 Two’s company

Ride with a buddy (or group). It’ll make the whole experience safer and more fun. Chances are something will happen on the ride that you can laugh about.

04 Guard your vision

A mudguard and glasses are a good idea. Often you won’t see mud or puddles early enough to avoid them. Eyewear will also help protect you from low-hanging branches and trail debris.

05 Know your lights

It’s essential to have a good idea of how long the batteries are going to last. Plan your ride to be shorter than this and allow yourself extra time in case of an unplanned stop.

06 have some back-up

Always remember to tell someone where you’re going and what time to expect you back. If you’re riding solo and get injured, it’ll be hard to find help in the dark.
