DT Swiss XM 1501 Spline One 30 £849.98

-

DT Swiss are almost unique in making their own hubs, spokes and rims, and they capitalise on this advantage by producing brilliant wheels at every price point. The XM 1501s may seem expensive for alloy, but their overall performance is better than that of many far more expensive carbon wheels.

The heart-profile rim is available in various widths, from 25 to 35mm, but the 30mm version tested here is perfect for aggressive riding on wider tyres. Rims come taped, with valves supplied, as well as six-bolt adapters for the fast-fit Centerlock system. The 28 front and 32 rear DT Swiss Competition double-butted, straight-pull spokes are laced up three-cross for a longer stretch at an angle that can absorb vertical loads more easily. Low-block flanges help reduce weight, so the latest 36 SL version of DT’s legendary ‘Ratchet System’ can launch you forward. If a 10-degree lag is too much, you can upgrade the engagement speed for a quicker snap off the start line.

It’s the pitch-perfect ride quality that keeps us going back to the various 1501 width options whenever we need to defibrillate a dead-feeling test bike or find the ultimate potential of a belter. They feel way lighter and more responsive than the scales say, so they’re always keen to attack the group or just go hard up a lonely climb. Feedback is clear and rich even on rowdy trails, but there’s enough shock absorption to enhance traction and keep your hands alive. www.madison.co.uk
