DETAILS
COVERAGE
All the helmets here o er more head coverage than you’ll find on lighter-weight, XC-style lids, with the rear of the shell dropping lower to better protect the back of your head. While this means they may run hotter when working hard, the added protection is worth it for trail riding.
VENTS
The more air intakes, exhaust ports and internal channeling a helmet has, the cooler your head’s going to be on the climbs and descents (as long as they’re well designed). They should also make the lid lighter, but potentially not as strong unless weight is added elsewhere.
CHIN STRAP
Securing the helmet to your head, the strap passes under your chin where it usually fastens with a quick-release plastic buckle or magnetic Fidlock clasp.
GOGGLE PARKING
Wearing goggles with open-face helmets has become increasingly popular. Now a lot of peaks can be adjusted far enough up to provide a ‘parking space’ on the front of the lid for goggles when you’re not descending.
CRASH REPLACEMENT
Most brands o er some form of crash replacement policy, whereby they’ll o er you a new helmet at a discounted rate. Terms and conditions vary, so be sure to read the small print if you need a new lid.
