YOUR FACE RULES!

Six common mistakes that cause skin damage on your face

-

We’ve enlisted skin expert, Emma Hobson, Education Manager for the International Dermal Institute and Dermalogica, to share her ultimate beauty don’ts.

1

DON’T... over-exfoliate We really only need to exfoliate our face once or twice a week. ‘Exfoliant junkies can cause increased sensitivity and inflammation to the skin on the face,’ says Emma. Over-exfoliating can also lead to dehydration, premature ageing and pigmentation. Try

Trilogy Gentle Facial Exfoliant, $36.95.

2

DON’T... get sunburnt A bad burn can increase your risk of skin cancer, and heighten the effects of premature ageing. ‘Wear SPF30-50 sunscreen 365 days a year,’ says Emma. Try Little Urchin Natural Sunscreen, $24.95.

3

DON’T... pick at spots ‘Picking or squeezing a spot will only make it worse. It spreads the infection, which can lead to more spots,’ claims Emma. On top of that, it can also cause permanent pigmented scarring. Try Paula’s Choice Clinical Scar-reducing Serum, $33.

4

DON’T... forget to cleanse Aim to cleanse in the morning and evening. ‘Not cleansing will lead to dull skin with rough texture. It can also increase sensitivity, dehydration, congestion and breakouts,’ says Emma. Try Dermalogica precleanse balm, $65 for 90ml tube with cleansing mitt.

5

DON’T... use soap Always opt for a soap-free facial wash. ‘Soap strips the skin of much needed oils and natural moisture,’ notes Emma. It’s a known sensitiser due to its alkaline ph. Try

The Body Shop Aloe Calming Facial Cleanser, $19.

6

DON’T... skimp on moisturiser Every skin type needs daily moisture. It protects the skin against the environment and locks in hydration, keeping skin supple and soft through the day. Emma recommends an oil-free formula for those with oily skin. Try Ego QV Face Ultra Calming Moisturiser, $17.95.
