MARY COMFORTED HER CHILDREN AT PRINCE HENRIK’S FUNERAL

-

Dressed all in black as per royal tradition, Princess Mary provided some much-needed comfort to her family as they attended the funeral of her father-in-law Prince Henrik in Copenhagen last week.

The grief was etched on the young faces of her children, Prince Christian, 12, Princess Isabella, 10, and twins Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent, seven, as they stood outside the chapel of Christiansborg Palace. During the private ceremony, Mary offered hugs and kisses, and remained a pillar of strength for her husband Prince Frederik and her mother-in-law Queen Margrethe II.

Attended by just 60 carefully selected guests, the funeral was followed by a procession that saw thousands of people line the streets to farewell the prince, who passed away in his sleep following a lung infection.

‘His Royal Highness Prince Henrik died on Tuesday, February 13, at 23.18 quietly at Fredensborg Palace,’ read a statement from the palace confirming the sad news.

‘The Prince was surrounded by Her Majesty the Queen and their two sons.’

Diagnosed with dementia last year, the prince made headlines when he announced he did not want to be buried next to his wife of 50 years because he was hurt that she never made him king. Respecting his wishes, the palace said half of Henrik’s ashes would be scattered in the Danish sea and the other half buried in the garden at Fredensborg Palace.
