New Idea

TO THE SMALL SCREEN

AMY ADAMS RETURNS

-

Amy Adams isn’t a stranger to the small screen, appearing in bit parts in Smallville and the The Office, before finding international acclaim on the big screen. But, the Oscar-nominated actress is returning once more to television to star in the dark thriller, Sharp Objects.

‘I think what is happening in television is this real renaissance, and I believe especially for female characters,’ she told Entertainment Tonight of her return. ‘To be able to develop one character over an arc of eight episodes is really thrilling.’

The limited series is an adaptation of the sell-out novel of the same name from author Gillian Flynn whose other novels, Gone Girl and Dark Places, were made into feature films. And, like 2017’s smash hit series, Big Little Lies, the eight-episode psychological thriller is directed by Emmy winner Jean-marc Vallee. Camille Preaker (Amy Adams) is a troubled journalist with a penchant for drinking and she finds herself returning to her small Missouri hometown to investigate the mysterious murders of two young girls. Her assignment begins to uncover dark secrets from her past, as she is forced to confront her psychologically abusive relationship with her mother, Adora Crellin (Patricia Clarkson).

Making the switch back onto the small screen isn’t the only big step for the 43-yearold actress. Amy was also fundamental in bringing the novel to life, acting as an executive producer of the series.

‘It has been such a wonderful journey, not only playing Camille, but getting to try my hand in that new role as well,’ she told Entertainment Tonight. ‘It has been awesome.’

Producing and acting is a big challenge, but the mumof-one says that raising her daughter, Aviana, eight, has given her plenty of training.

‘Amy the mum and the executive producer have a lot more in common than Amy the actress,’ she joked. ‘I feel like executive producing is sort of like running a household a little. You know it takes a lot of creativity and a lot of patience.’

But Amy won’t be letting her daughter watch Sharp Objects any time soon, revealing that she gives Aviana age limits before she can watch her films.

‘She’s seen Enchanted and she’s seen The Muppets, so we’re good there,’ she shared. ‘It’s a good place to start.’
