SHAKE UP YOUR MAKE-UP BAG FOR A NEW, YOUNGER LOOKING YOU
Make-up artist to the stars Liz Kelsh shares her secrets so that your make-up will always work for you and not against you.
‘Make-up is the most powerful thing, ever’ reveals Liz. ‘It can make you look like you’ve had 10 hours sleep, you drank two litres of water yesterday, and you look as fresh as a daisy!’
DON’T DO THIS!
‘I think one of the biggest mistakes I see are women who get stuck in a make-up rut. They are still wearing the same foundation, which worked for them in their 20s but they’ve noticed it’s not working anymore. Or they think, “oh, I shouldn’t wear as much make-up as I get older,” whereas you should actually wear MORE... But it’s about being clever with your make-up.’
SKIN
Women often tell Liz that their skin “just sucks up their foundation”. ‘Usually it’s not the foundation, it’s more a problem with their skin and they need to up their exfoliation – it’s the fountain of youth! The skin renewal process slows down as we age so you have to speed that back up again and get more glow into your skin so it’s soaking up the moisture, then the foundation will go back to sitting on top of your skin.’
BLUSH
‘If your blush is too sparkly it can sit in your pores and highlight them,‘ says Liz, so go for a creme, moisture-rich blush. ‘Nothing brings your face back to life like wearing your blush a little higher – still on the apples of your cheeks but a little higher. This distracts from any darkness you have and wakes you up.’ The best hue? ‘Soft pink suits everyone. Keep your cheeks and your lips tonal, so in the same family of colours. I love Max Factor Miracle Touch Creamy Blush
in Soft Pink, $14.95. ‘You can put this on your lips too with clear gloss over the top.’
BASE
As your skin changes, so should your foundation, says Liz. ‘Max Factor’s Healthy Skin
Harmony, $36.95, is really beautiful. I gush over it so much! What I love about it is it covers age spots and any redness I have but it doesn’t sit in lines – it’s moveable and it has oil absorbing properties. In the day I get quite oily in the T-zone but that doesn’t happen anymore – it magically knows to stay matte here and dewy there.’
HIGHLIGHTING
Liz calls highlighting ‘your filler injection’. Take away the shadows and you’ll look much more awake and fresh and just less tired. ‘If you don’t know where to put a highlighter then the easiest way is to stand under a down light and you will see where your face shadows and that’s where you put your face-lift highlighter. And your glow highlighter is anywhere you want the light to bounce off, so think cheek bones and the bridge of your nose.’
