Having only just jetted back from a romantic Tuscan wedding, Karl Stefanovic and his fiancee Jasmine Yarbrough are now in the giddy throes of planning their own nuptials.
But after a turbulent year for the Today host – who is still recovering from the embarrassing fallout of the infamous Ubergate scandal – Karl is determined not to let anything overshadow their big day, a source tells New Idea.
‘It’s been a lot to deal with for Jasmine,’ says a friend. ‘The bitter divorce, then all that went down after his shocking phone call with his brother Pete was leaked. He doesn’t want any of that to get in the way of making it perfect for Jasmine. After all, it’s her first wedding and she has been dreaming about this day for a long time.’
Announcing their engagement in February and planning to tie the knot later this year, it was long assumed that, with such close bonds to their families, the happy couple would be holding their lavish event in Australia.
‘Karl wants Pete as his best man and his mum by his side,’ says the friend. ‘And Jas is really close to her parents and couldn’t bear the thought of not having her siblings there on the big day, but the stress is really getting them down.’
But now, torn by their desire to leave the drama behind them while staying close to the people they hold dear, the couple has some serious decisions to make.
‘Secretly dashing off to their friends’ ceremony in Italy was perfect,’ says the source. ‘They got to escape from it all and had the best time. It’s got them thinking about the possibility of eloping somewhere romantic, just the two of them, and they’re excited about the possibilities.’
And, looking back at their extravagant commitment ceremony in March, the couple will not have forgotten the controversy that surrounded it, when ex-wife Cassandra Thorburn called the police over concerns for their children.
‘Of course it marred the memory somewhat,’ says the friend. ‘And with everything going on around them, who knows what else could go wrong this time.’
Their stunning European getaway just last week to attend the wedding of their friends, businessman Jack Bedwani and fashionista Rae Temily, was worlds apart from the daily grind in Sydney.
Sharing carefree snaps on social media, shoe designer Jasmine was every bit the glowing young bride-to-be.
‘It was clear to see they were both happier than ever in those photos,’ says the friend.
‘IT’S GOT THEM THINKING ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF ELOPING SOMEWHERE ROMANTIC’
