TIM OMAJI ‘I WANT TO BE AN ACTOR’

THE DANCE BOSS JUDGE TALKS ABOUT WHAT’S NEXT IN HIS CAREER

-

Aussie singersongwriter and dancer Tim Omaji – aka Timomatic – shot to stardom as a contestant on So You Think You Can Dance back in 2009, and later appeared on Australia’s Got Talent, placing third in 2011. Since then, the talented performer’s career has gone from strength to strength.

Not only has Tim had hit singles and supported acts like Flo Rida and Salt-n-Pepa, he is now a judge on the new TV show Dance Boss.

The 30-year-old is also set to appear in the upcoming musical Madiba, which celebrates the life of Nelson Mandela – something he tells New Idea is a ‘dream come true. But despite his busy schedule, he isn’t planning on slowing down.

In fact, Tim is ready to take his career to the next level.

‘Acting is definitely on the cards and it’s a thing I need to tick off,’ he says. ‘I’ve been really working hard and getting ready for the stars to align. You will see in some of my upcoming video clips that I’m going to bring that more dramatic side to the them, but to do a TV show or a movie, that’s the plan.’

As for his dream role? ‘Something that would require me to transform, like playing a heavyweight boxer,’ he reveals. ‘Anything that is challenging or transformative, I run towards it.’

Before he takes that next step, Tim is relishing his latest role as a judge on Dance Boss.

‘It’s different to what you would normally see,’ he says of the show. ‘Dance shows are usually elite level dancers from start to finish but this show features everyday workers, and it’s quite special.’

Having participated on two competition shows himself, Tim is happy to be on the other side of the stage this time around.

‘I would much rather the judge’s chair,’ he laughs. ‘But, being that I came to prominence in this country via [talent shows] it gives me a cool insight and a relatability to the teams.’

Joining Tim on the judging panel are Sharni Vinson and Adam Garcia, and while the trio hit it off, it wasn’t always smooth sailing for the judges.

‘There were definitely times there were differences of opinion on who to send home,’ he admits. ‘It was all done in respect for each other but there were some heated times.’

When it comes to his personal relationships, Tim likes to stay out of the spotlight. His last high-profile relationship was with fellow dancer Talia Fowler. The couple, who met during auditions for So You Think You Can Dance, had an on-off relationship for several years before they finally called it quits in 2014.

They were rumoured to have rekindled their romance shortly after, but Tim confirms to New Idea that he is currently single and looking for love.

‘If love comes knocking, I’ll open the door!’ he laughs. What’s more, when he finds the right girl, Tim would love to become a father.

‘I would definitely love to start a family one day,’ he reveals. ‘I love kids, and for the most part they love me too.’
