50 SHADES OF FABULOUS
THE HOLLYWOOD LEGENDS TALK FRIENDSHIP, LOVE AND THEIR LATEST FLICK
Book clubs have never been this sexy!
Diane (Diane Keaton), has been recently widowed after 40 years of marriage, Vivian (Jane Fonda) never allows herself to get too close to men, Sharon (Candice Bergen), is still working through her divorce from years ago and Carol’s (Mary Steenburgen) marriage is in a slump after 35 years.
But, when Vivian suggests that the four lifelong friends read the salacious 50 Shades Of Grey for their book club, the women’s lives are turned upside down.
From finding new romance to rekindling former flames, the women discover that this could just be the best – and sexiest – chapter of their lives.
When it comes to their on-screen love interests in Book Club, the women are in good company. In fact, Diane thinks that Andy Garcia, who plays Mitchell, will be our next Hollywood heart-throb. ‘All the women are going to love him and he is going to be the lead in these romantic movies,’ she jokes. ‘Working with Andy, I want to say, was one of the best pleasures of my recent life.’
As for Jane’s on-screen lover, she had one demand: ‘A few years ago, I saw a movie that Don [Johnson] was in and I was blown away,’ she reveals.
‘I think he’s handsomer now than when he was young, but also he has depth. So, when Book Club came along I said to [the director] I’d love to have Don play my love interest.’
We don’t blame her – the actor looks better than ever as the charming Arthur.
But when it comes to her own love life, Jane admits she is off the market. ‘I think I’m done – I’m 80, thank you.’
As for her co-star Mary’s real-life marriage to Ted Danson, things have never been better. ‘It’s been spicy for a very long time,’ she jokes.
This is the first time that the four Hollywood leading ladies have worked together.
‘I didn’t know what to expect
of these three women, because I had met all three of them, but I had never worked with any of them before,’ Mary reveals.
‘I was so thrilled that these icons that I had always looked up to, were more amazing as women than even the characters that they played.’
Like their counterparts in the film, the women became best of friends.
We loved hanging out together,’ Jane shares. ‘We’d go to the garage – that was our green room – and we’d spend time together in the garage. And we just learned so much about each other, it was really fun.’
‘We’ve all sort of agreed that we have to keep the friendship going and keep that alive,’ Candice adds.
And don’t be fooled by their age – these women keep in touch the modern way, as Mary jokingly notes: ‘There’s text chains and email chains and funny gifts being sent...’
