New Idea

Aussie bride’s Meghan-inspired gown.

Kate Marie Martin, 27, from Victoria was the lucky winner of a Meghan Markle-inspired wedding dress and she is simply over the moon with her gown designed by couture designer Aldo Terlato.

The high school teacher who is set to marry partner James, 27, had no idea that her motherin-law had secretly entered the New Idea competition – which asked readers to say in 25 words or less why they deserved to win a dress inspired by Meghan’s gorgeous Givenchy gown.

“Winning the competition means a lot for two reasons. The first is that my future mother-in-law was thoughtful enough that she entered me and I am blessed by her presence in my life,” says Kate. “The second would be that I’ve never had the opportunity to have anything couture and the fact that it is for my wedding is very special and something that I will remember for a long time.”

Kate says she likes the details and the shape of the dress the most. “The combination of lace and embellishment where they are positioned just make the dress, in my opinion. The shape is also very flattering and one of my favourites,” Kate reveals.

The self-confessed Meghan Markle fan says she feels like the perfect bride at the fitting. “I can’t wait for James to see me on the day,” she confesses. Kate says she’ll feel like a princess on her big day, which is set to be a low-key affair with just family and close friends. The theme colours are navy and burgundy with hints of silver and, after a church ceremony, they’ll celebrate with a grand reception.

“The Meghan-inspired gown process began with sketching the gown once the duchess stepped out of her bridal vehicle. It took over 50 hours to make with a team of three. The dress suddenly came alive at the fitting when Kate stepped into the gown, which fitted her perfectly,” added the designer Aldo.
