EXPLORE THE LATEST TIPS IN CAT STYLING AND GROOMING

-

Here, Rufus & Coco CEO and founder of the Fur Salon, Anneke Van Den Broek, discusses the latest trends in cat grooming and her top tips for keeping your kitty looking good …

WHAT ARE THE MOST POPULAR CUTS/STYLES?

With more people recognising the benefits of regular cat grooming, salons are bringing in groomers who are specially trained with cats. Different styles, trends and colours are taking off, with the recent Jurassic-inspired cat grooming trend, the Dinosaur Cut, going viral. Other trends include different fur colouring with safe-to-use temporary dyes and pawdicures to match!

Beyond looking like a catwalk star, a regular groom can help pick up on health issues, keep their fur in great condition and even relax them.

CATS ARE PARTICULAR ABOUT GROOMING. DO THEY ENJOY THESE TRENDY HAIRCUTS?

A personalised consultation with a groomer can help you work out which treatment or cut might be best for your cat. Your cat should be comfortable around people and also enjoy leaving the home before you consider visiting a grooming salon.

Long-haired cats can particularly benefit from a style cut – helping to keep matting under control and keep them cool in the often harsh Aussie climate.

WHY IS GROOMING OUR CATS IMPORTANT?

Grooming can pick up ticks and fleas. Regular brushing can remove dead hair, stimulate new growth and bring your cat’s natural oils to their skin and prevent matting on longer coats. As with dogs, nail trimming is as important for their comfort as it is for you to not get scratched. Overgrown nails can cause discomfort and pain. Many cats spend most of their time indoors so their nails aren’t being naturally worn down as they would be through contact with rough outdoor surfaces.

Grooming your cat also provides an opportunity to bond with them and check for injuries or abnormalities.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR GROOMING CATS?

It’s important to brush your cat regularly and keep up flea and tick treatments.

For older cats, those with reduced mobility, or lazy cats who don’t keep up their own maintenance, wash them once a month or so with an all-natural shampoo designed for a cat’s delicate skin and coat.

If your cat becomes restless or shows signs of stress, stop and then start again when your cat is relaxed. Reward with praise and treats.
