THE VOICE WINNER: DIANA’S SECRET BOND WITH KEITH URBAN
Boy George may have been her coach during this season of The
Voice, but 2019 winner, Diana Rouvas, still has a special place in her heart for former mentor Keith Urban.
“I was very lucky. I had a lot of respect for Keith. He was a very genuine person as well, honestly. He’s known for that and for being straight up and I was lucky to have both of them,” Diana tells New Idea. “He’s got a lot to do in his life. We’re not talking every week but he was a great support of mine at the time.”
After Diana’s stellar win, legendary performer Boy George was delighted for his mentee, beaming with pride as she busted out a Whitney Houston number in the grand finale.
“[Boy George] is incredibly genuine, authentic and kind, and quite a beautiful person. I can’t say enough about him and how highly I hold him,” Diana gushes.
“He said he was in shock and just so happy for me. It was a beautiful thing to see.”
The 35-year-old songstress was still in a state of shock when she spoke to New Idea in the aftermath of her victory last week.
“It was a pretty outstanding moment. And I haven’t really processed it yet,” Diana confesses.
“Not much sleep and just kind of running around. I’m probably going to wake up and realise soon!”
It’s been a long eight-year struggle for Diana, who won viewers over with her spellbinding power ballads while placing fifth in the 2012 season.
The Sydney-based singer used to work in a factory, dreaming of making it big one day.
“It was a win for a lot of losses. It was, seriously, so many years of knockbacks and ‘almosts’,” she says.
And for the All Star, winning The Voice won’t just further her blossoming career. She’s also planning on using the $100,000 prize money to pay off some old debts.
“I’ll probably pay off a couple of credit cards. And then invest into my career,” she laughs. “But I’m sure I could indulge in a nice vintage rug or something.”
