CREATE YOUR OWN VEGIE GARDEN

REAP THE FRUITS (AND VEGETABLES!) OF YOUR LABOUR

-

With home improvement projects on the rise and a mindset towards more selfsustainable living, it’s never been a better time to establish a home vegetable garden. Get started with these expert approved tips.

Breaking ground

Before you begin, Bunnings horticulturist Katy Schreuder recommends considering the placement of your vegie garden.

“Ideally it should be in a north facing area that’s not too exposed to the wind to ensure the plants get the most sun during winter.”

A raised garden bed made with untreated sleepers or a pre-made structure is perfect for vegie gardens as it defines the parameters, contains quality soil – and will save your back from too much bending over.

A nearby water source is also useful for frequent watering, particularly during the establishing phase when Katy says it’s vital “to keep the soil moist”.

Seasonal planting

Horticulturist and Northcote

Pottery Brand Ambassador (northcotepottery.com) Melissa King advises planting a “cool season vegie patch” during autumn.

“Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, peas, onions and kale are all ready to go in to the ground – so be sure to keep the water up to your young, growing seedlings.”

Katy adds that herbs like coriander, fennel, garlic, parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme are also ideal when the weather and soil starts to cool.

Get your hands dirty!

Ongoing watering and maintenance are a must.

“Keep garden beds fertilised regularly and use seaweed extract to promote strong, healthy growth,” advises Katy.

You’ll also need to be on the lookout for destructive weeds and pests. “With more moisture comes more weeds,” explains Melissa. “It’s best to pull out these pesky plants while they’re still young.”

“Look out for caterpillars, slugs and snails,” adds Katy. “Use organic pest control products to ensure you’re not eating anything nasty and don’t spray just before you harvest.”

With some time and effort along with sunshine and water, you’ll soon be enjoying fresh foods plucked from your very own garden.
