INTERNET SAFETY 101
HOW TO HELP YOUR TEEN NAVIGATE THE ONLINE WORLD
Kids are spending more time than ever online and in front of a screen these days, so how can you make sure they’re safe out there?
Charlie Brown, technology commentator and creator of G-mee smart devices, discusses safe surfing for kids and teens...
WHAT RISKS ARE KIDS EXPOSED TO IN FRONT OF A SCREEN?
Technology is advancing at such a rapid pace that the younger generation of tech users are even savvier about how to use and manipulate technology for different uses. New viruses, scams and ‘app challenges’ pop up regularly, and we need to make our teenagers aware of the risks involved in engaging with technology. A new app or device brings new experiences or challenges, but also new threats to safe operation and privacy.
WHAT ARE SOME WARNING SIGNS TO LOOK OUT FOR IN MY KIDS?
A connected device is a potential access point to a predator. It’s important for parents to be aware of the content that their teenager is consuming and engaging with online, and that starts with the location devices are used. The location, in a public place in the home, then allows for parents to gain better understanding and connection around behaviours exhibited during device use and the amount of time the device is used day-to-day. By starting with device use in a public location, you create the best practice for safe use.
HOW CAN I TEACH MY TEENAGER ABOUT APPROPRIATE AND INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR ONLINE?
Start by opening a discussion, and develop their digital maturity by talking about the risks involved in using technology. Talk with them about the apps that are most appropriate for their age and how they can engage with these apps. Set certain times of the day for smart technology use, or opt for a smart device that offers parental control functions.
HOW CAN I ENSURE MY TEENAGER SAFELY NAVIGATES BEING ONLINE?
You can’t ensure anything, but you can start with a connection with your teenager over this part of their life – one where you are open-minded and engaged with this part of the development, as much as other areas. The technology they access and the way they use it has the potential to help or hinder them in ways you never experienced growing up. But if used well, you can stay safely connected to your teenager, and this could allow you to give them more freedom. That’s where safe, connected technology presents the best opportunity to play a crucial role in Australian families.
