Mum life ACCORDING TO LAUREN!

MOTHER OF SIX LAUREN NEWTON SHARES HER TRIALS AND TRIUMPHS

-

Growing up, Christmas was huge in my family. I always wanted to give my children the same magical experience that I had, and although we might not do it quite as big as my parents did, it’s still a very exciting time that my kids all look forward to.

After the year we’ve had, it feels more important than ever for the kids to enjoy themselves with a wonderful Christmas full of fun, food and presents, while enjoying our time as a family.

The lead-up is almost as wonderful as the day itself. Our tree goes up super early so that we get into the festive spirit. My daughters, Eva and Lola, take charge of the decorating, covering the tree in special ornaments we have collected over the years and things the kids have made. It’s up high on a dresser, away from curious toddlers, but somehow still manages to have things grabbed off it along the way!

The kids are also very excited for our Elf on the Shelf to make her appearance on December 1. She stays until Christmas morning keeping an eye on everyone, and reports back to Santa daily (I wish I could keep her all year round!). We also make wish lists where the kids find things they like to make a detailed list. If only they showed the same commitment to school work!

On Christmas Eve, we attend Mass and then sit down to a traditional

Christmas dinner, and watch the Carols by Candlelight.

My husband and I then settle in for a night of wrapping. Christmas morning is wonderfully chaotic, with an early morning present opening at home.

My mum always cooked Christmas lunch when I was growing up, but the year my

Nan died we just couldn’t sit and have lunch without her. So we decided to change it up by going to a Chinese restaurant at Crown Melbourne. It worked well and we have been going now for over 20 years!

Another highlight is the Christmas pudding Mum’s friend has been making each year for over 40 years. It’s one of my favourite traditions.
