Mum life ACCORDING TO LAUREN!

MOTHER-OF-SIX LAUREN NEWTON SHARES HER TRIALS AND TRIUMPHS

-

When I think of Easter as a child, I remember going to mass, spending time with my family and eating my body weight in chocolate! They are wonderful memories I cherish, even more so now my dad is not with us anymore.

For my children, Easter is very much the same mix of family time and chocolate eggs. I like to continue the traditions of cooking fish on Good Friday and a roast dinner on Easter Sunday, and making sure that we all sit down to enjoy it together. We go to mass and spend time with the people we love over the weekend. Life is so busy now and it is a great time to slow down.

We do some Easter activities that are usually run by my mum. She is very creative and gets the kids to paint eggs or egg cups. She is also wonderful at making Easter hats with them to wear in a hat parade. It is lovely to see them working together and making a mess.

The kids get very excited about the Easter bunny, so we’re always prepared with baskets to collect the eggs in and, if we’re organised, some cute Easter pyjamas. The very clever Easter bunny always manages to find us wherever we are and is also wonderful at leaving dairyfree and nut-free eggs, so that everyone can eat them. I must say I’m not as relaxed as my parents were with the eating of chocolate, but Matt and

I try to let them enjoy it without making themselves sick. We usually hide some so they don’t eat them all (we often find them months later, hidden in the cupboard!).

I really love getting into the spirit of these family celebrations and traditions. I hope my children enjoy the wonderful memories of Easter as much as I did – and hold onto them like I do. One of my favourites is from when I was about 6 and the Easter bunny left a treasure hunt for us, where we had a piece of string to follow all around the house and there were clues left along the way. I can still hear the excitement and laughter from us all as we made our way around the house. I can’t remember what the surprise was, but the fun in finding it is what I’ll always remember.

This Easter, I’m sure like most people we will be hoping for quiet family time with plenty of chocolate and making of memories, with no COVID and the freedom to leave our house as we want. It may not happen, but as we have learnt over the years, we can manage in all situations and even make the best of it. We will all do our best to have a safe and happy time. A happy Easter to you and yours!
