Body brushing 101

GET READY FOR YOUR SMOOTHEST SKIN YET!

-

Say hello to our new favourite treatment – dry body brushing. This trending routine is taking the beauty world by storm with celebs such as Miranda Kerr, Gwyneth Paltrow and Elle Macpherson among a long list of wellness advocates devoted to the trend. The best part? It’s inexpensive, easy and can be done all from the comfort of your own home.

WHAT IS IT?

Dry body brushing involves brushing the body with a bristle brush to stimulate lymphatic drainage and release toxins from the body via your skin. Aussie model Miranda has included it as part of her routine for over 10 years. It’s “a great way to get the circulation going, remove dead skin cells, aid lymphatic drainage, detoxify your system and keep your skin smooth all over”, she reveals on her KORA Organics blog. Meanwhile, Gwyneth credits it for her glowing skin. “I do it every night before I get in the bath,” she explains.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Besides eliminating toxins in the body, other benefits include increasing circulation and blood flow, and helping to smooth and exfoliate skin. It can even minimise any lumps and bumps to help reduce cellulite.

HOW DO YOU DO IT?

If you’re new to the practice, its best to start by trying it out in the morning before you shower. Begin by brushing with firm, upward strokes from your feet, then move up your legs towards your torso, arms and neck. It’s always a good idea to keep the direction of your strokes towards your heart. When it comes to your stomach, move the brush in a clockwise direction to help support good digestion and a healthy gut.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO AFTERWARDS?

Dry body brushing is best followed by a shower to wash away the toxins released and remove any dry skin. It’s also recommended to follow up with a moisturising body oil to help improve and nourish skin. Always ensure to keep your hydration levels up and drink plenty of water to assist with the detoxification process.
