WHAT TO EXPECT ONCE YOU KICK COFFEE TO THE CURB

Most of us have heard if not uttered the words “Don’t talk to me until I’ve had a coffee...” and, as Malissa Fedele (nutritionist for online health site Goodnessme) tells New Idea, it’s for a good reason.

“We can find ourselves relying on [coffee] for energy and motivation, which becomes a bit of a trap as it can actually have the opposite effect,” she says.

“Coffee can increase your heart rate, boost stress hormones and really impact your sleep.”

Excessive coffee consumption can also provoke heartburn, dehydration, and an increase in bone loss in post-menopausal women.

Which is why plenty of coffee drinkers are forgoing their daily cup(s), explains Fedele. This is her advice on the benefits and side effects of a coffee detox.

We’re not going to sugar-coat it – coffee detoxes can be testing for some people.

“As it is such an addictive substance, your body will experience withdrawals,” Fedele says.

Common reactions include headaches, fatigue, and irritability (which can often be enough to make you reach for the coffee machine!)

To help keep adverse reactions at bay, seek out caffeine-free alternatives to coffee, stay hydrated, and ensure you’re getting enough rest.

Despite the side effects, it’s worth pushing through when going cold turkey.

“Caffeine impacts your levels of cortisol and melatonin which can have a huge impact on your sleep cycle. By doing a caffeine detox your sleep will improve,” Fedele says.

A coffee detox will also lower anxiety symptoms, including increased heart rate, hypersensitivity, and stress, and you’re likely to find you have new and stable energy levels, which makes it all worth it!
