Between them, Aussie sisters Hayley and Mandy Mcelhinney have starred in many of our best-loved dramas, from Doctor Doctor to Love Child. But fans are still hoping to see the pair act opposite each other – now Hayley confirms they might not have to wait too much longer!
“We are going to make it happen! It’s just finding the right project, which hopefully we will soon,” Hayley tells New Idea.
Until then, Hayley is starring in Mystery Road: Origin,a prequel to the acclaimed drama starring Aaron Pederson and Judy Davis. And as Hayley reveals, her role is quite the departure...
What can you tell us about your character Max?
She’s a small town cop who really shouldn’t be one. She’s very different from the characters I usually play. She’s lazy, abuses her power and is just out for herself. When a new detective arrives in town, she’s very threatened and does whatever she can to get in his way.
Is it fun being the bad guy?
Absolutely! It’s fun to play someone different from myself and a great challenge, but also a bit of a risk to see if you can pull it off and look natural. But roles like this don’t come around very often, so you have to grab them when they do.

loved Detective Jay Swan. Are fans going to be happy with the portrayal?
I am a massive fan of the original series and Aaron did such an amazing job in creating Jay. Watching Mark walk in the first time with his hat, it was unnerving how much he captured the spirit of the character. Jay is in very safe hands.
How did you prepare for the role?
I’ve never played a cop before so it was wonderful to have Tasma Walton on set. I worked with her a lot on the details, things like how to stand, hold a weapon and carry myself.
Were you happy with how Doctor Doctor ended?
I loved every second of playing Penny. I feel very grateful and proud to have been involved.
