Swinging to SUCCESS

YOUNG GOLF CHAMP ZAC HAS A ‘HOLE’ LOT OF TALENT

- By Maisy Rae

Standing on the green, palms sweaty, Zac Wolfe beamed widely as he was crowned the best junior golfer at the U.S. Kids Golf World Championships.

The 6-year-old was handed the championship trophy in August at North Carolina’s world-famous Pinehurst Golf Club. It’s reminiscent of a scene Zac’s watched “probably 100 times” in his favourite film, the golfing doco

The Short Game.

“I was really nervous, and I had all butterflies,” Zac says with a smile.

With the power of his right-handed swing and trusty white glove, Zac won the boys’ sixand-under title, beating a field of 73 elite junior golfers. No-one was cheering louder than Zac’s father, and caddy, Jeremy.

“For him to win and to get honoured on stage in the exact same scene as the movie was quite surreal,” Jeremy tells New Idea from their home in Melbourne’s south.

“To see your child out of their comfort zone, apply themselves, make connections and friendships … it’s amazing.”

When faced with a challenge on the green, Zac only has to look at his glove, with a special smileyface added, and it reminds him not to give up.

Introduced to golf by his dad and mum Katherine, Zac first picked up a club shortly after he turned

1. He won his first competition at age 2 and has been on a winning

streak ever since.

“He’s certainly pulled us back in the sport … he inspires all of us,” Jeremy says, beaming with pride.

“The hard work, dedication, how he conducts himself … he’s like an elite athlete.”

“I want to be the next Tiger Woods!” talented Zac interjects, laughing.

Now in prep, Zac gets his training at his beloved Huntingdale Golf Club before heading off to school and impressing his friends with his swing.

“Sometimes they high five me and say, ‘Well done

‘I want to be the next Tiger Woods’

Zac’,” he laughs.

Looking to the future the father-son duo has their sights set on future competitions and perfecting Zac’s swinging technique.

“Whatever he chooses to do in life,

I think we trust as parents he’s had such a cool set of experiences,” Jeremy says. “He really just wants to be on the course and play.”
