TEAM EVENT WINNERS: PORSCHE CAR CLUB OF NEW ZEALAND IVAN FULLER’S 1958 PORSCHE 356A T2 SPEEDSTER

-

Ivan owned several VWS in his younger days and whilst he was well aware that Porsches were indeed a rare and expensive car even then, that never quelled his desire to own one.

In the 1980s, Ivan travelled to the US for his O.E. and couldn’t resist the urge to buy a 1983 Porsche 911SC. With Ivan’s intimate understanding of the genetic material, history of the design, evolution and relationship with VW, coupled with his serious interest in air-cooled VWS, it was certainly no surprise that he ended up with a 911.

In 2010 Ivan decided to search for a high– end car project, although he was only too well aware how easy it is to over capitalize on such projects, so he was very careful in his selection. There were indeed a number of possibilities that were available worldwide which Ivan considered before concluding what he thought was the most logical choice — a Porsche Speedster. Eventually, Ivan found this Speedster (#84825, built on 24 April, 1958) after looking at a couple of examples and he purchased it sight unseen, although he did travel to the US to check it out once he’d paid for it and before it was shipped.

The Speedster was originally sold by Hoffman Motors in New York to a local doctor. No other history is known about the car apart from evidence of a roll cage being fitted — perhaps it has some racing history.

In early 2011, the Porsche 356 Speedster arrived in New Zealand and the Taranaki-based Revive’m Auto Restorations team wasted no time in getting straight to work on what would become a 3500 hour, full restoration project — the final result being this award-winning Porsche.

Ivan won the coveted Masters’ Class competition in 2014 with a record 567 points out of a possible 590 points.
