Bucket list

-

After reading Garry Boyce’s story in this issue about his wonderful adventure through South America with fellow Kiwi Ken Williams in the co-driver’s seat as they tackled The Rally of the Incas, I got thinking.

For many of us, these adventures, especially when they involve classic cars, are a must for any bucket list, which brought me to another point — where was mine?

I can remember preparing a bucket list several years ago, and, after much searching, discovered it tucked away in the bowels of my hard drive. I wasn’t surprised to see that I hadn’t done too well in achieving my goals.

What I found ever more disconcerting, though, was the fact that the list was quite achievable; after all, I hadn’t wished to be on the inaugural flight to Mars or wanted to put a Bugatti Veyron in the garage. On the contrary, I’d seemed to take a more conservative approach and added things like attending an Indianapolis 500 motor race and driving one of my all-time favourite cars — a Lamborghini Countach. The latter was achieved a few years ago while it was in our studio for a photo shoot. The owner was kind enough to let me drive his amazing machine for a brief but memorable period — tick.

For me, the list was quite simply all the things I wanted to do in life, and to tick them off one by one as I did them. A list of dreams that hopefully one day would come true was not something I found easy to do, and then life somehow got in the way and more immediate concerns became a priority, as I’m sure most of you concur. The dreams became less and less relevant — until recently.

Garry and Ken’s story inspired me to revisit my list and start ticking off all the things I’ve always wanted to do. After all, life is short, folks, so, if you haven’t already done so, I urge you to put pen to paper and make a wish list — a list that’s real, with personal significance, and begin the journey.
