1994 MERCEDES-BENZ E 320 COUP E

The words ‘pillarless coupé’ will conjure images of huge Cadillacs, a modern Bentley Continental, and others such as this month’s cover car, the Dodge Charger. But, for a fraction of the cost of one of those giants, you could get into the airy, breezy feel of a pillarless coupé with this W124 E320.

While the W124 isn’t the most popular version of the E-class — which has been a staple of the Mercedes-benz range since the 1960s — it’s still unmistakably Mercedes.

The E320 wasn’t a cheap car when brand new (costing north of $120K). It came with some pretty slick tech for the time, including taillights and front corner indicators, which are rippled to keep dirt and debris build-up from inhibiting their luminescence (yep). Headlight wipers were standard to perform the same function. The passenger-side rear-view mirror is squared for better short-distance visibility, whereas the driver-side mirror is rectangular for better long-distance visibility. Inside the E-class, things carry on being as epic as you’d expect. Big, luxurious, cream leather seats are offset nicely by a walnut-trimmed dash — made of the real stuff not some knock-off.

The E320 put out 162kw (217hp) from factory, and boogied along thanks to a 3.2-litre straight-six engine paired to a four-speed gearbox (with overdrive). As anyone with a passing interest in older Mercedes-benz will know, the 120,000km on the speedo means that this sprightly girl is just being run in.

This Merc has been well looked after, and is now being sold on behalf of the owner, who recently passed.
