New Zealand Classic Car

Home project I

nvercargill service manager Barry Pope enjoys rebuilding some pretty challenging cars. Away from the everyday work of his garage, he looks forward to getting home and working in a garage–workshop combination that many of us would love to have tucked away in our backyard.

He currently has two projects on the go at home. One of these is his friend Phil Creedy’s 1958 Chevrolet. Judging by the condition of Barry’s own classic driver, an immaculate 1969 HK Holden Monaro, this Chevrolet should be a stunner when it’s finished.

It was not quite so good when Phil brought it home, though, as Barry explained: “The car was pretty bad when Phil had it stripped back to bare metal. A lot of panels were missing; whole sections, thanks to rust … This car has been a lot of work. A lot has been replaced.”

Now painted in a brilliant red, the car is starting to take shape and will be a good one to follow up on as it nears completion.
