10 February
The biggest and the best
New Zealand’s biggest and best classic car show — and we are not just saying that because we sponsor it — will take place at Ellerslie Racecourse on Sunday, 10 February.
For close to half a century, the Ellerslie Classic Car Show has been the centrepiece of summer for thousands of classic car enthusiasts, and this year more than 70 car clubs will gather to display some of their best cars in this picturesque venue. Keep an eye out for clubs entered in the Best Club Display competition to see which best evokes this year’s theme: The Collectables.
After last year’s downpour, organizers will be be hoping that the weather returns to form. That will be especially true for host club MercedesBenz, which will be featuring a swag of SL roadsters from throughout the decades in its 34-car display. The club got to host the show and provide most of the volunteers to run the event after winning the team event in last year’s Intermarque Concours d’elegance.
The concours event gives clubs and individual car owners the chance to have their cars, and their car preparation, assessed by independent judges in three categories. Winners of this world-class show have gone on to win even more prestigious concours competitions overseas.
If you are in Auckland that weekend, keep an eye out on Saturday for classic cars taking part in the Tour d’elegance, which starts in six locations around the region, meeting up at Vellenoweth Green in Saint Heliers.
