KOMBI KARRY-ALL

A GENUINE SPLIT SCREEN RARITY

-

If the Daimler ute featured in this issue has whetted your appetite for a classic car pickup, New Zealand Classic Car is happy to oblige. Split screen Kombis are already sought after but this single cab pick-up is rarer still.

This Kombi was one of a tribute series produced for one year only in 1975, paying homage to the split screen vans of the previous decade. They were made in Brazil, which continued to make air-cooled VWS long after production ceased in Europe. It was sold only in South Africa, and shared the showroom with the German bay window models current at the time.

Production finished in March 1976. Only around 5000 were made — not VW’S usual style at all.

They were created from a mix of the early and late Kombi parts including pull-out door handles and a 4-speed reduction box transaxle, nicely balanced with the later and much better 12V electrical system and dualport, 1600cc engine, giving modern owners the best of both worlds.

Released as a genuine commercial vehicle, this one has had its original vinyl upholstery

replaced at some stage for a more passenger friendly fabric.

Ready now for holiday adventuring — but it’s probably got more appeal as an eyecatching promotional vehicle or coffee cart, taking it back to its commercial roots. Nice one, Brazil. It has been well looked after, garaged and is in excellent condition for its age. Call Tristram European on 09 441 0090 for more information.
