BUILDING UP STEAM
Every issue we pair a reader with a top Nikon-pro for a special one-on-one masterclass. This is the story of their day together. This is the N-Photo Apprentice…
Name Phil Jones Camera Nikon D300
Phil is one of the most respected steam train photographers in the UK, and has his work regularly featured in the top railway magazines. He is not a full-time pro, as he works four days a week as a chef. Come the weekend he heads off from his home near Liverpool in his quest to strengthen his already impressive portfolio of images of preserved steam up and down the country. You can see the stunning results he gets at www.aportraitofsteam.com
Name Gerry Powell Camera Nikon D200
An engineer by profession, Gerry has been fascinated by steam trains since he was a boy. Now semi-retired, he volunteers at the Bluebell Railway not far from his home in Shoreham-by-Sea. He uses his D200 to take pictures of butterflies, birds, his two young grandaughters… and trains. He asked us to take his steam train photography to the next level, so we paired him up with a master of the art, Phil Jones, for a special one-day master class at the Severn Valley Railway.
