Avoid burn out

Phil says… The biggest thing to avoid when shooting trains is burnt-out smoke or sky. For this reason I got Gerry to set up his D200 so that he could use the Highlight Alert to avoid these overexposure problems. This, coupled with the histogram, allows you to set up exposure ahead of the train arriving.
