The best place to pho­to­graph steam trains is on an in­cline. The en­gine has to work harder to climb the slope, so you get more ex­haust – and you want plenty of smoke for a suc­cess­ful shot. If you shoot on a downhill sec­tion, you need the co-oper­a­tion of the driver to open the reg­u­la­tor and re­lease steam at just the right point so that you can get a de­cent-look­ing shot.
