Uphill stretch

The best place to photograph steam trains is on an incline. The engine has to work harder to climb the slope, so you get more exhaust – and you want plenty of smoke for a successful shot. If you shoot on a downhill section, you need the co-operation of the driver to open the regulator and release steam at just the right point so that you can get a decent-looking shot.
