Guardian pho­tog­ra­pher De­nis didn’t just shoot the Rib­ble­head Viaduct, he cap­tured a po­lit­i­cal mood.

Born in Not­ting­hamshire in 1932, De­nis Thorpe worked in provin­cial news­pa­pers be­fore join­ing the Manch­ester of­fice of the Daily Mail in 1957. He was named Re­gional Press Pho­tog­ra­pher of the Year in 1971 and left the Daily Mail in 1974 to join the Guardian. Many ex­hi­bi­tions and awards fol­lowed, in­clud­ing World Press Photo Foun­da­tion in 1979 and Il­ford Pho­tog­ra­pher of the Year in 1988. Two ret­ro­spec­tive ex­hi­bi­tions of his work have been shown at The Lowry, Sal­ford.
