Chris says… The man­ual calls this a gen­eral mem­ory card er­ror, which could mean a prob­lem ac­cess­ing the card, the cam­era be­ing un­able to cre­ate new folder, or the card not be­ing for­mat­ted cor­rectly.

Firstly, check whether you get the same er­ror with other cards. If you don’t, it sug­gests a prob­lem with that par­tic­u­lar card.

If the er­ror hap­pens with other cards, it’s likely the cam­era’s in­ter­nal Com­pact Flash reader is at fault – its ar­ray of pins can be­come bent or cor­roded.
