Find an abstract angle

1 Find a reflection Look for an unusual angle for your abstract image. Reflections can be great, as the long exposures necessary at night cause the water to blur, creating smudges of different coloured light. A zoom lens comes in handy here, as you can go in closer to focus on one thing and exclude all the recognisable details.

2 Flip the image Post-processing can add to the mystery of the image. Here we rotated the frame to turn the reflection upright. Abobe’s Camera Raw plug-in is ideal for edits like this, and it also has another feature that is invaluable for correcting vertical lines your night-time architectural images – the Upright command.
