“Textured trees can make graphic black and white images,” says John. “The very tall trees on Monkey Island are perfect for this treatment. When shooting upwards with a wide-angle lens like this, I’d recommend underexposing by one or two stops in order not to lose detail in the leaves at the top. Use a small aperture and manually focus at the hyperfocal distance so that you get both the roots and the canopy in sharp focus.”
