“Tex­tured trees can make graphic black and white im­ages,” says John. “The very tall trees on Mon­key Is­land are per­fect for this treat­ment. When shoot­ing up­wards with a wide-an­gle lens like this, I’d rec­om­mend un­der­ex­pos­ing by one or two stops in or­der not to lose de­tail in the leaves at the top. Use a small aper­ture and man­u­ally fo­cus at the hy­per­fo­cal dis­tance so that you get both the roots and the canopy in sharp fo­cus.”
