“When you’re tak­ing some­one’s por­trait in bright sun­shine, see if you can en­cour­age them to move into shade for a softer, more even qual­ity of light,” says John. “Use a shal­low depth of field to blur the back­ground and to keep a viewer’s at­ten­tion on their face, too,” he adds. Luis took this por­trait with his old 50mm f/1.4, us­ing an aper­ture of f/1.6 and mak­ing sure he nailed the fo­cus on the eyes.
