You might have to make several attempts before you capture the perfect cloud of colour

■ There’s an element of luck involved in capturing the perfect moment with the best spread of paint. It helps if you count down from three so everybody (thrower, model and photographer) can synchronise. Whip the shovel forwards and then back to keep it out of the frame, and experiment with different amounts of paint. Out of about a dozen throws, we captured three or four great shots, which is a decent return.
