Winter glow

This photograph was taken on a beautiful winter day when the sun was really low in the sky. The most important thing on this occasion was to find a light background, with space in between the family, to create a silhouette effect.

Flash outdoors

I love using backlight for location portraits, but it is essential to use fill flash for these kinds of shots, because as far as the camera is concerned your subjects are in shadow. Without it, the subjects’ faces would look underexposed.

Flare play

Once again I used fill flash for this image, and I was aware of the lens flare, which created a halo effect, at the time of shooting. With a little direction you can encourage natural interaction between parents and their children.
