Excavation of Sand

The small hillside market town of Lembang in Indonesia bears witness to large-scale sand mining. The natural resource is a crucial component of concrete, and is coveted by developing countries such as Morocco and India, as well as across Indonesia. Much of this mining is done illegally, by gangs known locally as the ‘mafia’.
