Use ex­po­sure com­pen­sa­tion

Lou says… Tracy shoots in aper­ture-pri­or­ity mode, but she never uses ex­po­sure com­pen­sa­tion. To pro­tect high­lights, and to pre­serve de­tail in whites, I tend to set -1EV, and some­times as much as -2EV for darker sub­jects. Not only does this help pre­vent blown high­lights, it has the added ad­van­tage of in­creas­ing the shut­ter speed.
