EXPERT INSIGHT Reveal the invisible

-

Joe says… A 30-second exposure can reveal a scene which you can’t see with the naked eye. Sometimes a night-time cityscape is too dark to really see anything, but a long exposure brightens everything. Even if you can’t make out the shot you want, use your compositional rules and try taking a photo anyway, especially if there’s still some light in the sky. You won’t be able to tell what you have until you’ve captured it. A long exposure will also smooth out any ripples in water, giving it a sheer, glass-like quality.
