THE GREAT NPHOTO ROAD TRIP
One week, a campervan, a Nikon D750 and some fantastic weather. Jason Parnell-Brookes takes us on a photographic tour of Scotland’s spectacular North Coast 500 route
Landscape photography is all about chasing the light. The quality, quantity and direction of light are what make or break a landscape photograph. If you’re mobile then you have more chance of reaching the right location at the right time. A car will do this, of course, but for true ease of shooting, nothing beats a campervan. I took one around the highlands of Scotland with the aim of capturing some stunning scenery at sometimes unsociable hours. Having the van meant I could park closer to where I needed to be and stay overnight, avoiding a timely trek from a hotel. This meant I was there in the middle of the action when the light was just right. On the go you also learn a lot, and you learn it quickly. Sunrises and sunsets, shooting astro at night and heading to the lochs during the day – there was nothing I couldn’t go and photograph. But before I headed out into the wilds of Scotland, I had to prepare for my photographic road trip...
