Of course, it has to be a great pic­ture, a great mo­ment that en­cap­su­lates a story, but a cover also, let’s be hon­est, is the sales tool, it’s the ad. Those ads are de­signed to stop you and con­vince you to pick the mag­a­zine up. The dif­fer­ence be­tween a good frame and a great frame is sub­jec­tive. I like to talk about the ‘col­lec­tive sub­jec­tive’; I can show a pic­ture to my mother and she’s happy with ev­ery­thing that I shoot, but when you show it to

ev­ery­body and ev­ery­body agrees it’s a great pho­to­graph, that’s the col­lec­tive sub­jec­tive, and that’s the stamp of ap­proval on a great pho­to­graph, or on a great video.
