For my next shot, Michael suggested I use a hard graduated neutral density filter to darken the sky above the horizon line. This meant I could expose for the sea without overexposing my highlights in the sky. I switched to the Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 telephoto lens and zoomed in to 92mm to isolate a few stanchions (uprights) in the water. Michael explained that I shouldn’t allow the stanchions to ‘kiss’ the horizon, and they should either sit proudly above the horizon or down below it. I liked the look of placing the uprights below the horizon, because it felt more inclusive.
