Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HS M | A £650/$850
The focal length works well for DX cameras
This Sigma lens has an ideal viewing angle for street photography on DX format cameras, where it has an effective focal length of 36mm. It’s two-thirds of an f/stop faster than the competing Nikon 24mm f/1.8 lens on test but has larger-diameter optical elements. As such, the Sigma is larger and nearly twice as heavy as the Nikon, at 665g. Even so, it doesn’t feel unduly hefty on lightweight DX bodies. As a ‘DG’ lens, it’s fully compatible with full-frame ‘FX’ format cameras.
The optical path is the most complex of any lens in the group, with 15 elements that contain multiple FLD (Fluorite-grade Low Dispersion), SLD (Special Low Dispersion) and aspherical elements. Other headline attractions are shared with the Sigma 35mm lens. Performance Fast, quiet and consistently accurate autofocus combines with superb image quality to make this lens a top performer. Manual zone focusing is easier than with the Sigma 35mm lens, thanks to depth of field markings for f/8 as well as f/16.
