Our pro’s verdict…

This is the stand-out shot from Ed’s portfolio of osprey images. It is pin-sharp, well-exposed and perfectly framed. Most importantly, it captures all the drama of the hunt, with the rainbow trout in the osprey’s talons just breaking clear of the water, and I can’t help but be transfixed by the bird’s riveting eye contact! By shooting a short burst of images in AF-C mode, Ed has ensured at least one good frame, with the osprey’s wings in that attractive ‘heraldic’ pose, rather than concealing its face (as so often happens in bird photography). This is a tremendous achievement with a particularly challenging subject, especially considering this was Ed’s first encounter with wild ospreys.
