Red kite

Nowadays red kites are quite widespread, and you might see hundreds at one time at the kite feeding centre in Rhayader, Powys, where I photographed this specimen while leading a Nikon School workshop. I used a Nikon D300, AF-S 200-400mm f/4G VR lens, and a tripod with a gimbal head.

White-tailed eagle

It still gives me a thrill to see this huge raptor up close. Here I was on a boat near the isle of Skye when this adult eagle soared low overhead, and I photographed it handheld with a Nikon D3 and AF-S 200-400mm f/4G VR lens.

Short-eared owl

This short-eared owl was a winter visitor to a local nature reserve not far from my home a few years ago. Late one afternoon the bird made a few close passes as it was hunting, and I got his attention for a moment. Shot with a Nikon D4S, AF-S 500mm f/4E FL-ED VR lens plus TC-14E II teleconverter, tripod and gimbal head.
